I may be interested in becoming a Catholic as an adult. What is the first step?

If you are interested in becoming a Catholic as an adult, the first step is to contact the Parish Office and express your interest in joining the Catholic faith. Here are some possible steps to take:

  1. Attend Mass at your local Catholic parish. This is a great way to familiarise yourself with the Catholic liturgy, meet members of the community, and learn more about the faith.
  2. Speak with the priest or parish office. You can contact your local Catholic parish office to schedule a meeting with the priest or someone else on staff to discuss your interest in becoming Catholic. To get in touch with us, simply contact the Parochial House, Milford on 074 9153236 or email milfordkerrykeel@gmail.com and we will get back to you promptly.
  3. Enroll in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program. RCIA is a program designed for adults who are interested in becoming Catholic. It typically includes classes on the Catholic faith, opportunities for spiritual growth, and preparation for the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist).
  4. Begin your journey of faith. Becoming Catholic is a personal and spiritual journey. Along the way, you may want to seek guidance from the priest or a spiritual director, attend retreats or other events, and participate in the life of the parish community.

Remember, becoming Catholic is a process, not an event. The Catholic Church welcomes those who are interested in exploring the faith and joining the community. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your local Catholic parish for guidance and support on this journey.

Education

I would like my child to go to a Catholic school. Does he/she have to be baptised first?

It is not necessary for a child to be baptised before attending a Catholic school in Ireland. However, some Catholic schools may give priority to baptised children when admitting new students.

To find out more about the admissions policy of a specific Catholic school, you should contact the school directly.

My child is at a non-Catholic school. Can he/she join your Sacramental Programme for First Holy Communion?

Yes, your child can join the sacramental programme for First Holy Communion at our Parish, even if he/she attends a non-Catholic school.

  • Contact the parish office early to inquire about the programme and the registration process.
  • Be prepared to provide information about your child, such as his/her name, date of birth, and baptism certificate (if applicable).
  • Attend a meeting with the parish priest or religious education coordinator to discuss your child’s preparation for the sacraments.
  • Work with the parish staff to develop a plan for your child’s sacramental preparation. This may involve attending classes, participating in retreats, or meeting with a priest or deacon on a one-on-one basis.

It is important to remember that the sacramental program is a journey of faith for both the child and the parent. Be supportive of your child throughout the process and encourage him/her to ask questions and learn more about the Catholic faith.
